I started out on tumblr with the username “mediumaction”, five years ago. If you dig in to the archives, you will note that at first I thought I would write seriously about angling and conservation topics.
Turns out.
Anyway, if you’ve joined me in the past year or so you might’ve done so under the “wjflowers” moniker. I’ve moved that username to another blog, at wjflowers.net, which remains empty.
Why the switch?
Well, part of it is the domain name silliness. I am looking seriously at moving away from GMail and rolling my own address under the wjflowers.net banner, over at hover (who are awesome, by the way). My pal Chris noted that the “mediumaction.net” domain could sound a little… pr0ny. I am not clear on whether he is aware of Rule 34, which by definition is an indictment on any domain name, not just those with “Action” in the title. Be that as it may, I believe he does have a point, hence the switch back to “mediumaction” on this blog and a clean slate at “wjflowers”.
“Medium action” refers to a particular firmness in certain fishing rods. If you’re not a regular angler but have a fishing rod lying around in the shed or storage closet, chances are it is a medium action rod and reel combo. You know, a six-foot rod with ten-pound test monofilament on an open-faced reel. It’s an incredibly versatile setup, which I have used in the past to land everything from tiny perch to fifteen-pound pike.
Needless to say, this did not end up becoming a fishing blog by any stretch of the imagination. It is my random collection of chuckles, interesting tidbits, and the occasional yarn like the one you’re reading right now.
I would like to start a more “serious” blog, which would be over at wjflowers.net. But for the life of me, I cannot find that intersection of obsession plus voice that is so key.
If I ever do get the hang of long-form writing and wish to focus in on a handful of “serious” topics, it’ll mostly sit over there. In the meantime, please continue to enjoy my unstructured foolishness over here at Medium Action, as I have been enjoying yours.
